This list features the Top 10 Black News Stories of the week ending Friday May, 14th, 2010. Making the headlines this week includes a body building grandma, the consequences of bad sex, interracial dating, a Katrina hero, and a 22 year old high school student.

10. Body Building Grandma Bench Presses, Runs Marathons At 73

At 73, Ernestine Shepherd is in better shape than most people decades her junior. Up at 3 a.m. every morning, she spends her days running, lifting weights and working out other senior citizens at the Union Memorial United Methodist Church in Baltimore. She also works as a certified personal trainer at her gym. “I feel better than I did at 40,” she said. “I am very, very happy.”  In less than 20 years, Shepherd has morphed from a “prissy” woman who never exercised to the Guinness Book of World Records’ oldest female bodybuilder. A die-hard “Rocky” fan — “Sylvester Stallone is my man,” she cooed. Shepherd is preparing for a body building competition this weekend. Source –

9.  Hair-braiding bill offers regulatory compromise

Illinois requires hair braiders to get a cosmetology degree, which can take 1,500 hours and cost $15,000, and then apply for a license, just like people who give haircuts, manicures and facials. Proponents say the rules are needed to protect consumers if they develop problems such as hair loss or have service complaints. But the law seems ridiculous to many braiders, the majority of whom are African and African-American women who learned as children and have refined their talent in kitchens and on stoops for generations. “Hair braiding is not cosmetology,” said Alie Kabba, executive director of the Chicago-based United African Organization. “You cannot ask an engineer to get a degree in history.” In a clash between rules and tradition, hundreds of braiders have chosen to ignore the law — including Wague, who said threats by state regulators to shut down her shop forced her to go underground, working only with established clients. Now Illinois lawmakers are trying to carve out some relief. Under legislation that passed the House and Senate and awaits the governor’s signature, braiders who prove they’ve practiced their craft for at least two years could automatically get a hair-braiding license after paying a fee. New braiders could get a license after undergoing 300 hours of training in braiding methods and sanitation. Source –

8. Regina King Thinks Black Women Should Try Interracial Dating

In an interview with Vibe, actress Regina King says Black women are limiting their options when it comes to dating non-Black men. Of all groups of people, Black women are the least likely group of women that will date outside of their race. When you have everyone else who is willing to explore but a Black woman is like, “I want me a brother,” well, if the brothers are out and they’re open to date everybody and the majority of Black women aren’t willing to look twice when a man outside of their race is sending them messages, then that makes our percentage rate lower and the chances of finding love, because we’re only looking in one specific place for finding love-with Black men. She says maybe it’s a regional thing or maybe it has something to do with self esteem. It’s more common here on the West Coast. I think in New York, you find more Black women that date outside of their race, but in L.A. not as many. I think Black women need to open up. A lot of Black women still carry a lot of pain when they see Black men with women who aren’t Black and that’s really unfortunate that that could make us so upset. It has to do with self esteem. With women on a whole, what a man thinks about us means so much to us. Does he think my hair is right? Does he think I look right? Does he think my ass is big enough? Does he think my titties are big enough? Read more

7.  Chicaigo’s Black Population Drops To Third in Nation’ Atlanta Now Second

“The State of Metropolitan America,” compiled by the Brookings Institute, shows that Chicago has been surpassed by Atlanta, Georgia as the city with the second-largest black population in American. The New York metro area has by far the largest number of African-Americans — over 3 million, almost as many as Chicago and Atlanta combined. But Atlanta’s gains are all the more striking when put into context. The tri-state Chicago metropolitan area has nearly 10,000,000 residents; the area around Atlanta is roughly 6,000,000. And as recently as 1990, it ranked only seventh nationally in the size of its African American population. While Atlanta’s influx of 446,000 new black residents in the last decade is by far the greatest in the country, many other southern cities also saw their African-American populations rise. Dallas and Houston gained more than 100,000 black citizens each; Miami, Charlotte, Phoenix and Tampa also saw significant upticks. 5. Will Smith to make Katrina film

Will Smith, through his production company Overbrook Entertainment, has partnered with Sony Pictures to purchase the rights to the story of a man named John Keller, who bravely risked his life to organize and carry out a rescue of 244 of his neighbors from a building in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Keller, an Ex-Marine, took it upon himself to rescue the people after the five-story housing complex was submerged in 11 feet of water because the Levees that were intended to protect New Orleans, were breached. Keller’s story was featured in several publications, and was national news for a short period when details surrounding his act of heroism were revealed. He has said publicly that his only intention was to help the elderly and vulnerable people in the building, and he did not set out to “play a hero”. Read more

4. Alley-oops! High school hoops star is a 22-year-old

ODESSA, Texas (AP) — A West Texas student who led his high school basketball team to the state playoffs last season was actually a 22-year-old man, police said Tuesday. Police say the basketball star was really Guerdwich Montimere, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Haiti who school officials say was recognized last month by Florida coaches as having been a star high school player in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., a few years ago. Ector County school district officials said the man posed as 16-year-old Jerry Joseph and enrolled at Permian High School in Odessa for the 2009-2010 academic year. He also presented himself as homeless to the school’s basketball coach, Danny Wright, who took the boy in last summer, the coach said. Montimere was arrested at Permian High on Tuesday and booked into Ector County jail on a charge of presenting false identification to a peace officer. Read more

3. Sammy Sosa: Back to Black?

Word on the street is that Sammy Sosa has given up his bleaching ways and come back to the darker side of things. Spotted recently in Miami, he’s reported to be back to normal. Do you think he finally came to his senses? Sammy Sosa stunned fans last year when he turned up at the Latin Grammys with noticeably whiter skin. The home run legend claimed he’d mistakenly used a cosmetic cream with an unintended bleaching effect. But last weekend at club Liv at the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach, “Sosa was seen partying with friends and according to one source, he appeared to have his color back. Source

2.  Woman Stabs Hubby After Bad Sex

A Hudson, Texas woman smiled for police Tuesday after authorities say she stabbed her common-law husband with scissors in the chest, hand and knee for performing badly in bed. Police arrested 26-year-old Michelle Thomas yesterday after being called to her home by the victim. The man told police that after having a sexual encounter that left her “unsatisfied” she grabbed a pair of scissors and began “slashing at him.” Police say the man had superficial cuts to his chest, thumb, and knee but said he did not want to press charges. Thomas says however that her husband, who had been drinking, threw her onto the bed and began choking her. After finding no visible injuries to corroborate her story, she was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and assault with a deadly weapon to the dismay of her spouse. If convicted she could get up to 20 years in prison and face a $10,000 fine. Source – blackvoices

 1. Police Sgt. Lied About Being Shot by Black Man

A white Philadelphia police sergeant is being fired after confessing that he shot himself on purpose and fabricated a story about being shot by a black man, authorities say.
Police don’t know why Sgt. Robert Ralston, 46, a father of five and 21-year veteran of the department, would hurt himself. Philadelphia Police Department Sgt. Robert Ralston confessed that his April 5 gunshot wound was self-inflicted, police said. “He did not give a reason for doing that. … He denied that he was trying to get attention,” Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said, The Associated Press reported. “He said he first considered shooting himself in the chest, but he thought better of it.” Ralston was suspended for 30 days with intent to dismiss, Ramsey said. Read more
